I found my peace with the Slovakian Weather Makers. I dared to give Slovakia another try so I crossed Danube this morning, a decision which was considerably influence by the outlook to ride the flat slovakian bank and look at the beautiful hungarian hills instead of riding through the latter. Though it was cloudy and pretty cold it stayed dry most of the time, so it was a great ride. On the way I passed by a monument remembering the peace between the German/Hungarian King and the Turks in 1606 - the main feature of the monument were 6 bells so I simply had to try them out. As later with leaving Slovakia I also left both Euro-zone and Kofola-zone I had to use my last chance for spending the first on the latter at a decently placed boat-restaurant on the Danube. When I was still riding on the slovakian bank but already saw the huge impressive basilica of Esztergom (largest church in Hungary) a short but heavy rain started - grmpf, the Slovakian Weather Guys seemingly did not want to let me go without that. Anyway, it forced me to spend my very last Euro in a long while for a delicious hot chocolate, so everything turned out perfectly fine. Once I had crossed Danube into Hungary again I first had some trouble finding the way but finally made it safely to the charming village of Sárisáp located in a lush mountain valley. There my host, Mrs. Urbanics welcomed me with overwhelming hospitality. I got to know to her mother and one of her daughters (who kindly translated between Hungarian and German) along with her husband. I am again and again amazed, how openly and warmly people welcome a dusty sweaty cycling stranger at their home, even if there is no common language. I wish I would know (and could pronounce) more Hungarian words than Köszönöm (thank you) to properly show my gratitude.

Day 021 Malacky - Neusiedl am See
Ok, it seems to be something personal between the guy responsible for Slovakian weather and me. When I started in Malacky the weather was ok (read: not raining). Less than an hour later the guy obviously had realized that Marek is on the road and opened the tap. So again I cycled through Slovakia in the rain, arrived at Danube in the rain, saw Bratislava in the rain, crossed the Austrian border in the rain - and about 10 min. later the rain stopped: Austria welcomed me with sunshine and a lot of wind - which in this case helped a lot in drying my drenched clothes. The ride through Austria was smooth, except for one short headwind area on Windradweg (wind cycle path). I was welcomed most wonderfully by the Goldschmidt family in Neusiedl am See and spent a very relaxing evening at their place.

Really rainy day 020 Skalica - Malacky
3 words to describe this day: wet wet wet! The Slovakian Weather Gods scorn me and I have no idea why - I am in the country since yesterday evening only and I most faithfully promise I did not commit any sins since then (at least according to my moral standards) !
Anyway, I had to start this morning in the rain, drove in the rain, made some breaks in the rain hoping it would get better and finally gave up and changed my strategy to trying to stay warm by just keeping on cycling and swearing in the rain. I arrived in Malacky in the rain and finally found a warm place to dry me and my clothes - that was the moment the rain stopped. Again: Dear Slovakian Weather Gods, what are you trying to tell me ?! I am sure Slovakia is a beautiful country, I'd just like to have a chance to look at it :o).

Cross country day 019 Kroměříž - Skalica
This days name is not at all connected to offroad cycling or other hardships but to the simple fact that I crossed my first country! Yeay, let's celebrate :o) !!!
After having breakfast with my wonderful host Petra I picked a not-so-rainy time to start my trip from Kroměříž. Except for the rain getting worse around noon it was a beautiful ride devoid of navigational problems as I just had to follow a good cycling path along river Morava (and I will continue doing so for the next 2 days until Bratislava). At late afternoon I finally crossed the border to Slovakia, so I have cycled through all of Czech Republic. It is time for some statistics:
Czech Republic:
Days spent in country: 16,5
Cycling days: 11,5
Rest days: 5
Distance cycled: ca. 835 km
Average km/day: ca. 50,50 km
Money spent: ca. 440€
Average €/day: ca. 26,66€
Accomodation:
- Couchsurfing: 4 nights
- Camping: 6 nights
- Wild camping: 1 night
- Pension/Hotel: 5 nights
Things lost: 1 number padlock at the Ostrava festival
Biggest challenge: Levelling out being able to cycle long distances and the high availability of both great quality Pivo and people eager to join you in the consumption of the same.
Best Icecream: Pegas Pistácie, followed by all the real-fruit-in-chocolate varieties. But Cortina toffee is also not bad at all :o)
