Today no biking, just hiking. We decided to give our bikes (and knees, shoulders, wrists) a bit of rest. We hiked up Říp, sometimes described as the holy mountain of the Czechs. The tale is somewhat similar to the biblical Moses-on-Mount-Nebo story: Forefather Čech
went up the mountain Říp after roaming the land with his people for quite some time. He saw from up there that the land around was fertile and unsettled - thus the Czech nation was born. In some versions of the tale his brother Lech went on to found Poland while their brother Rus went on to found youcanguesswhat. Of course there seems to be some dispute on who was the eldest and the youngest brother.
The way up Říp was very idyllic, through cornfields and sleepy villages with butterflies, bumblebees, goose and white pigeons. The view from Říp is perfect if you are about to find a place for your people - with Říp being a very lonely mountain you have great views to all directions. There is a chapel from the 12th century on top (which then replaced an earlier church) - it has been a sacred site for a long long time.
On the profane side I started a new project of trying all available sorts of zmrzlina in Czech Republic. I've already given up the idea of trying all available sorts of pivo - the new zmrzlina challenge is also very ambitious but doable if I just work on it hard enough.
